GSCCC Virtual Gold Award Celebration Watch Party Event

Join Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, at 6 p.m. for a very special virtual celebration of our Gold Award Girl Scouts! We will be honoring 17 Gold Award Girl Scouts from across our Council through this special event during our Facebook Live Watch Party.

Visit the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast Facebook page and select “going” on the GSCCC Virtual Gold Award Celebration Watch Party event page. Then, on August 11 at 6 p.m., join us LIVE where you can interact and celebrate these girls by posting your comments.

Peace First COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant Program

Across our movement, Girl Scouts are developing highest awards projects to take on the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the guidance of their councils, they are leveraging technology and community partners to lead change while practicing safe social distancing. Peace First has launched a grant program to help young people, 13 years or older, address the community impacts of COVID-19. Interested Girl Scouts can apply for mini-grants of up to $250 to help fund their projects, along with other in-kind support.

This month’s featured scholarship program is… eGirl Power!

Gold Award Girl Scouts who are interested in pursuing a STEM or cybersecurity degree can apply for the eGirl Power Gold Award Scholarship of up to $1,000 towards their education.

Girl Scout Cadettes and Juniors pursuing their Girl Scout Silver and Bronze Awards and working on their projects can apply for the eGirl Power Silver Award Scholarship and the eGirl Power Bronze Award Scholarship (up to $500)! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. 

eGirl Power is an IRS-approved 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a mission to educate and support girls through leadership skills development and career exploration with a focus on STEM and cybersecurity. 

eGirl Power is offering this opportunity to support Girl Scouts developing leadership skills to make a difference in the world. 

Girls can complete eGirl Power’s interest form to receive more information about their scholarships, as well as opportunities to participate in their Distance Learning program to qualify for other prizes and awards.

Deadline Extended to Earn Girl Scouts' Highest Awards

Bridging Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes and Ambassadors will have an extension through December 31, 2020, to earn Girl Scouts' Highest Awards. This is relevant or 5th grade Juniors, 8th grade Cadettes, and 12th grade Ambassadors who will bridge to the next program age level officially on September 30, 2020, and typically would no longer be eligible to earn the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, respectively.

Scholarship Opportunity - The Riley's Way Foundation Call for Kindness

Teens across the country can enter to win up to $3,000 to drive change that inspires kindness and build meaningful connections in their communities. Fifteen teen-led projects will receive this award, along with the opportunity to take part in the Riley's Way Kind Leadership Series. Applications are due March 31st.

This opportunity is perfect for Girl Scouts pursuing the Silver and/or Gold Award and who seek funding. This may also be a good fit for Girl Scouts seeking ongoing financial support to help sustain or build upon their highest award project (of course, it's deal for projects to sustain independently of Girl Scouts). Girls can visit the scholarship database to learn more.

The majority of scholarships and awards, like the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes (apply by March 31st), are most relevant for Gold Award Girl Scouts, so be sure to keep this on your radar!

Scout of the Year Award

Gold Award Girl Scouts may enter a Veterans of Foreign Way sponsored competition - Scout of the Year Award - and possibly receive a $5,000 scholarship! Those girls who have earned the award and are in high school are eligible. Visit www.vfw.org for details on the scholarship and to find your nearest VFW Post to submit your entry by March 1, 2020.

In the latest issue of the GSCCC Magazine (Winter 2020, see above), it stated that girls interested in earning the Girl Scout Gold Award will need to complete the Go Gold Workshop online. This statement was published in error. Girls DO NOT need to view an online session or attend a workshop. The Gold Award Committee is offering mini mentoring Question & Answer sessions with its committee members. These sessions will be set up before or after our regularly scheduled interview/review dates. Girls can sign up to request a slot via email to the Gold Award Committee at gsgoldaward.gsccc@gmail.com. These sessions are for girls to come and discuss project ideas, get answers to their questions or to receive assistance in finding a project idea if she is struggling.

Did you know that the Gold Award Committee is offering mini mentoring Q&A sessions with Gold Award Committee members? These sessions will be set up before or after our regularly scheduled interview/review dates. Girls can sign up to request a slot via the Gold Award Committee's direct email at gsgoldaward.gsccc@gmail.com. These sessions are for girls to come and discuss project ideas, get answers to their questions, to receive assistance in finding a project idea if she is struggling, or just to get the extra support she may need.

The first step in Going for Gold is for the Girl Scout to create an account on the Go Gold App. Once the Girl Scout has created her account, she will login and begin going through the steps. The new 2.0 Gold Award App is extremely user-friendly and will walk girls going for Gold through everything to complete her Gold Award Proposal. GSUSA has a full resource page that contains guides for girls, families and educators/leaders. In addition, girls can view the first Gold Award App tutorial video, The Five Elements of a Successful Girl Scout Gold Award.

News from the Gold Award Committee

Effective immediately, girls going for Gold will not need to attend the Gold Workshop. The new 2.0 Gold Award App is extremely user friendly and will walk girls going for Gold through everything to complete her Gold Award Proposal. GSUSA has a full resource page that contains guides for girls, families and educators/leaders. In addition, Gold Award App tutorial videos will be available soon. The workshop is no longer available, however, if a girl has any questions about anything related to the Gold Award, she can email the Gold Award Committee at gsgoldaward.gsccc@gmail.com. In addition, if a girl feels she needs a mentor, she can be assigned one.

News from the Gold Award Committee

The Colonial Coast Gold Award Committee has three ways for girls to have direct contact with the  committee members.

1. The committee offers mentors for any girl who asks for one, as well as assigning one when the committee feels that the Girl Scout will benefit from having a mentor. A mentor from the committee is not a project adviser. The mentor will help the Girl Scout through the proposal phase of the project.
2. Mini mentoring Q & A sessions with Gold Award Committee Members. These sessions will be set up before or after regularly scheduled interview/review dates. Girls can email the Gold Award Committee at gsgoldaward.gsccc@gmail.com to request a timeslot. These sessions are for girls to come and discuss project ideas, get answers to their questions or to receive assistance in finding a project idea if she is struggling. These sessions are informal but require that the Girl Scout has attended a Go Gold Workshop so she has the basic knowledge of Going for Gold. The next date is Saturday, November 2, 2019, in Virginia Beach.
3. Girls and adults can receive answers quickly and directly from the committee by emailing gsgoldaward.gsccc@gmail.com.

Going for Gold - Mini Mentoring Sessions

The Girl Scout Gold Award Committee is now offering mini mentoring sessions. Girls Going for Gold who are looking for help developing a project or have questions about Going for Gold may request an appointment time slot to meet with a committee member one-on-one. These mini sessions are being offered before or after current interview scheduled dates. The next meeting is June 6th, at A Place for Girls, and available time slots start at 4 p.m. and are by appointment only.

Girl Scout Gold/Silver/Bronze Awards Related to Sea Level Rise

Do you know of a girl working on her Girl Scout Gold, Silver or Bronze Award related to the effects of sea level rise, reducing our carbon footprint, reusing rainwater, or some other resiliency project? Encourage her to reach out to the Elizabeth River Project to display her project at the upcoming “Youth Imagine a Resilient Future Expo” on April 6th. Welcome to the Gold Award Family!

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) recently announced that Girl Scouts is officially bringing all Girl Scout alums who have earned the highest award in Girl Scouts- formerly referred to as the First Class, the Curved Bar, and the Golden Eaglet and now called the Girl Scout Gold Award- into the Gold Award Girl Scout family. GSUSA invites all highest award recipients to refer to themselves as Gold Award Girl Scouts.

GSUSA is offering these alums an official Gold Award digital credential to place on their social media profiles to show that they’ve earned Girl Scouts’ highest award, as well as a Gold Award pin and access to the Girl Scout Alum Newsletter launching in February. The newsletter will enable alums to connect with the Girl Scout Movement and keep up with all of the incredible things their fellow Girl Scout alums are doing across the country and around the world.

VFW Scout of the Year Program – Apply by March 1st!

Annually, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States awards three individuals including Girl Scout Gold Award recipients who have risen above their peers in exemplifying the qualities of this rank.

Awards are as follows:
$5,000 1st place National scholarship
$3,000 2nd place National scholarship
$1,000 3rd place National scholarship

Deadline for entry to VFW post is March 1, 2019.

Updated Gold Award News

GSUSA has made two changes to the Girl Scout Gold Award.

National has updated the Gold Award outreach to include that projects may benefit the Girl Scout Community. The standards of the Gold Award have not changed. To ensure that this does not dilute the prestige, leadership efforts, or impact of each girl’s project, the Gold Award must still complete the seven requirements that are key to making it a sustainable project. Every Gold Award project must contain two of the three components: build, advocacy, education and an active leadership component; as well as an organization who agrees in writing to sustain the project in the years to come.
