Sign a Piece of Camp Darden

We missed some of you at Volunteer Kickoff on Saturday, but we don’t want you to miss a limited opportunity to invest in Camp Darden’s Dining Hall! Make your gift of $50 or more today to support the outdoor experience for girls and sign a piece of tin to be placed in the Dining Hall when the roof is repaired. All gifts must be made before midnight on September 30th! Help GSCCC close out the 2016-2017 year strong and get us ready for a landmark 2018!

The tin will be available to sign between now and October 31st at A Place for Girls. Come by to sign a piece of Camp Darden!

Feed Virginia Day of Action

Virginia's First Lady, Dorothy McAuliffe, has designated September 29th as Virginia Food Access Network's first ever Feed Virginia Day of Action. In every part of Virginia, local organizations will be hosting events that support our food system and promote access to healthy foods and communities. See flyer for more details.

STEAM Volunteer Description- Volunteers will serve in assisting Nauticus educators in leading hands-on, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) activities that will be fun and exciting for our participants.

Essential Skills- Interested volunteers are at least age 14, have an interest in STEAM and education, experience working with children in a formal and/or informal setting, and be creative, energetic, and flexible. Effective communication and the ability to interact positively with children and other crew members a must!

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards - Girls in Grades 5-12, Apply by November 7

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors students in grades 5-12 who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service. There are awards on the local, state and national level. Ten National Honorees will receive $5,000 awards and a trip to Washington D.C. to attend a recognition event! Find out more here.

Girl Scouts Taekwondo Sampler!

Lynnhaven Taekwondo Academy, Virginia Beach, VA

Girls learn and explore an introduction to traditional Taekwondo and self-defense. Learn basic kicks, blocks and punches. Want a patch in Taekwondo? Learn the basics, then join us for a Taekwondo patch workshop to earn your patch. Workshop to earn your patch is $25 per participant.

Keeping girls and adults safe are our top priority! You can do your part by viewing the online Risk Management learning module. Troop leaders as well as volunteer support team members are required to view this online learning module annually. Refer to the Volunteer Learning Progression on page 20 of Volunteer Essentials for requirements. You will learn something new each year!

Recruiter Patch

Any girl in grades K-12 who recruits a NEW Girl Scout is eligible to receive this exclusive patch! Invite a friend to STEAM at Nauticus or one of our other fun GSCCC events. Tell her how much fun you are having as a Girl Scout. Another way to be eligible for the patch is to help your service unit or the Council at a recruitment. Girls who assist at these events are eligible to receive the patch. Girls who assist at more than one recruitment event will receive a star rocker panel for their recruiter patch to show that they are a super recruiter! Recognize Outstanding Volunteers

Volunteers do wonderful things and they go above and beyond the expectations of their position. Take time to recognize these go-getters by nominating them for a GSUSA national award. The deadline for nominations for the Appreciation Pin, Honor Pin, Thanks Badge, and Thanks Badge II is Wednesday, November 1, 2017, for volunteer service performed in the 2016-2017 membership year. Awards will be presented before the Annual Council Meeting on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the Chesapeake Convention Center.

Have You Been a Girl Scout Volunteer for 20 or More Years?

Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast formally recognizes volunteer years of service of 20 or more years (in increments of five years) at the Annual Awards event. This event will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the Chesapeake Convention Center.

If you have served as a volunteer for 20, 25, 30, 35, or more years, let us know by completing the nomination form by Wednesday, November 1, 2017.

Girl Recognition - Buck Harris Award Nomination

The Buck Harris Award was established upon the retirement of Buck Harris, a former executive director of the Virginia Tidewater Girl Scout Council. Buck dedicated her life to providing the finest in camping and outdoor education programs.

This award is presented at the Annual Council Meeting each year and consists of a framed certificate and a certificate towards attending a GSCCC sponsored summer camp. To qualify for the award, a girl must be nominated by the girls in her troop, group or service unit or by an adult who is aware of her qualifications. As girls decide on their nominee, help them understand this is more than a popularity contest.

Nominations are due to Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast by Wednesday, November 1, 2017.

Outdoor I and II Combined Course

With the addition of the Outdoor Camping badges, you will want to make sure you have a volunteer in your troop who can accompany the troop camping this year. After taking this combined course, troops will be able to sleep in platform tents, cook using charcoal and propane, and have a ceremonial campfire.

Become a Low Ropes Instructor for Camp Skimino

Is your service unit going to Camp Skimino for their service unit encampment? Do you need an instructor for the low ropes course at Camp Skimino? Start planning now for your spring service unit encampments and send two or three adults to the upcoming course.

By completing this course, participants will be qualified to work with girls on the GSCCC Camp Skimino low ropes challenge course. Learn Girl Scout activities that are appropriate to do with Girl Scout Brownies, Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors and adults, on the ground as well as on the challenge course.

In mid-July, upgrades to the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) included more choices for girls! The requirements for the new Journeys and badges are available on the VTK. New Event for Girl Scout Juniors

Girls will have a chance to get creative using recycled materials to invent the next world-changing creation. They will stay up late putting their engineering design process to work. This event culminates into seeing their awesome design displayed at the Invention Convention the next morning. Midnight snacks and breakfast will be provided. Still Seeking an ROV Volunteer/Coach

Are you the perfect coach to lead the Girl Scout ROV (remote operated vehicle) team to a victory? We are seeking one or two adults with an engineering background willing to volunteer their time getting the team ready to complete in April of 2018. Planning, building and testing needs to begin now. Labor Day Closure

All GSCCC offices and shops will be closed Monday, September 4, 2017, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

GSCCC Announces New Hours of Operation

Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast is pleased to announce new hours of operation, effective September 2, 2017. The change, which includes extending the workday by thirty minutes from Monday to Thursday, will help to accommodate our customers’ needs!

Here at GSCCC, it is important to us to provide the best customer service possible to our volunteers and caregivers, and it was with your valuable input that we made these changes to our office hours.
