Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Sea Adventures

As the school year concludes, it's time to begin planning activities for summer programs! The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center summer schedule has been released, and we are now accepting reservations for educational boat excursions!

  • Dolphin Discoveries - observe bottlenose dolphins, Virginia's most common and charismatic marine mammals, during a 90-minute ocean excursion. Besides close-up observations, this program provides discussions about incredible natural dolphin behaviors, the Aquarium's research, and what is being done to conserve and protect the species and its habitat. We also feature an assortment of permitted biofacts and other visual aids to add a hands-on element to the trip. Trips depart daily, May 26-September 4. Additional trips are offered at other dates and times; private charters are available with advanced notice.

  • Ocean Collections - curious about what lives in our coastal ocean waters? Discover the levels of our coastal marine environment in this engaging 75-minute exploration. The catch varies seasonally, and some of the exciting discoveries may include seahorses, stingrays, blue crabs, keyhole urchins, and jellies. Through observation and investigation, students become familiar with the adaptations, which help the sea animals survive in their particular habitat, and gain experience with the methods, and equipment marine scientists utilize to examine ecosystems and their inhabitants. During this hands-on trip, you'll have the opportunity to help work the trawl net, collect plankton, examine animals at the temporary touch pool, and release fish back into the ocean. Space is limited because of the hands-on nature of this program, and advanced reservations are highly recommended. Trips depart weekly on Wednesdays, June 21-August 30.

All trips leave from the Virginia Aquarium Dock, at 717 General Booth Boulevard, located adjacent to the Bay & Ocean Pavilion parking lot and include a cruise through Owls Creek with information about salt marsh ecology. A portion of all Sea Adventure ticket sales will support Virginia Aquarium conservation initiatives, including the rescue and rehabilitation efforts of the Stranding Response Team.

You can reach the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center Guest Services office at 757-385-FISH (3474) or vamscgso@virginiaaquarium.com to make a reservation.
