2016 Cookie Classic 5K and 1 Mile

Join the Girl Scouts of the 7 Sisters, 7 Cities community for the 2nd Annual Cookie Classic in in Chesapeake, VA. The Trefoil Trek is a 5K starting at 9 a.m., followed by the Samoa Stroll Kid's 1-Miler at 10 a.m. This event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and Girl Scouts can meet badge requirements!

We listened to our participants, and are returning to Bells Mill Park with course enhancements for a more accessible and family-friendly start/finish line. The volunteer race committee is working hard to improve the event, and this year we are offering free race photo downloads.  We are also rerouting the course so you won’t end the race on a hill (we think the latter is probably much appreciated!). Another change is our brand new logo. To celebrate our new logo, we are offering discount codes for our events from now through December 31, 2015.

Use the discount code TREFOIL to receive $5 off the Trefoil Trek 5K.   And use discount code SAMOA to receive $2 off the Samoa Stroll Kid's 1-Miler.

Global Action Award

Did you know the Girl Scout sisterhood not only stretches across the United States but spans the entire world, too?

Girl Scouts of the USA is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS, for short), which includes 10 million girls in 146 countries. And all of those girls in all of those countries are working to make the world a better place—just like Girl Scouts!

Each year, Girl Scouts of all levels can earn their Global Action Award. This award connects the WAGGGS sisterhood by helping girls work together to make a difference on a topic that affects girls and women all over the world. It’s an official national award, so girls can wear it just like a badge on the front of their vest or sash!

The theme for this year’s Global Action Award is “Increasing Girls’ Access to Education.” In many parts of the world, it is hard for girls to go to school and finish their education, whether due to poverty, lack of schools, or cultural factors. We believe every girl deserves the chance to get an education. Let’s make it happen!

To learn more about activities girls can engage in to raise awareness, help solve this worldwide problem, and earn their Global Action Award, check out these Global Action Award guidelines:

Girls' Choice Badges: And the winner is...

Guess what? Today is a great day. That’s because the winning Girls’ Choice badge topic is in! And the winner is (drum roll please)...
The second Girls’ Choice badge will be Art in the Outdoors. How much fun will girls have doing this?

Now the real fun begins as we work hard to write and design the new badges, which we will be testing with girls in January. We can’t wait to hear what they think. And remember, girls will also have the chance to vote on the design of their badge from January 11-22. Stay tuned for that link, coming in January.

Thank you so much to everyone who voted. We are thrilled to be working with girls on more girl-led programming—they’re our favorite partners!

In the meantime, start taking notice of that crisp blue sky or the abstract sculptures in your local park, and get ready to create some amazing Art in the Outdoors next year. Badge requirements will be available for download May 30, 2016 and in council shops by the summer.

The Key Ingredient in Digital Cookie? STEM!

Are you ready for cookie season? Girl Scouts across the country are once again kicking their cookie sales into high gear, and one of the ways they’re selling your favorite treats just might change the world. Parents will receive an emails beginning December 19, 2015 that will include directions for enrolling their Girl Scouts in Digital Cookie, allowing their girls to sell cookies online.

Through the Digital Cookie platform, a game-changing upgrade to the iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls have more ways than ever to connect with their customers, and are able to dig deeper into the economics of cookie selling by forecasting troop earnings and analyzing sales data. The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches the five essential life skills of goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics, and we’re excited to incorporate a new layer of twenty-first-century skills to ensure this generation is STEM savvy and ready to take the modern working world by storm.

The Digital Cookie 2.0 platform is made possible by Dell and Visa, companies that are providing Girl Scouts with the opportunity to learn more through platform technology and hardware enhancements.

The Tech World Needs Girls. We Can Help.

Close your eyes and try to picture a computer scientist. Who comes to mind? A geeky Anthony Michael Hall in Weird Science? Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man lair with his homemade gadgets? Whoever it is, chances are you’re thinking of a man right now—and that’s a problem.

Girls need to be exposed to the fun, exciting world of computer science so they can have a direct impact on the twenty-first-century world we live in; and all of us need girls in computer science so that we can benefit from their creativity, problem solving, and general drive to make our world a better place.

That’s why Girl Scouts is thrilled to be a part of Google’s Made with Code initiative, which is helping millions of girls learn coding basics. If there’s a girl in your life, and you want her to have the brightest future possible, check out our free Made with Code party kit. It comes complete with super fun activities (Mixbeats! Make an animated GIF!) you and your group can complete even if you, as the host, have zero experience with computer science. Who knows, you might learn a thing or two yourself!

Troop Project Opportunity - Centerpieces for Annual Award Luncheon

An Award Luncheon is held annually to recognize outstanding members who have a great impact on girls, our Council and the Girl Scout Movement. To add a special touch to the celebration, we are requesting donations of centerpieces created by girls to decorate each of the tables. In 2016, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award for girls, so the centerpieces should reflect that theme. This is a great chance for girls to show their creativity and share their artwork with all of GSCCC!

If your troop is interested in creating a centerpiece, please send notification by January 15, 2016, to christined@gsccc.org so that we know the number of centerpieces being made. Centerpieces can be delivered to any of the Council offices/service centers by Monday, February 1, 2016. Each centerpiece should be no more than 12 inches tall or wide and the troop’s number and location should be identified somewhere on the creation.

The 2016 luncheon will be held on Saturday, February 6, following the Annual Council Meeting at the Chesapeake Convention Center, 700 Conference Center Drive, Chesapeake, Virginia. Click here for more information about the Annual Council Meeting and Award Luncheon.

Contact Christine Duer, Volunteer Services Director, at christined@gsccc.org for more information.

Remotely Operated Vehicle Team

Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, do you love STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)? Do you want to learn more about being involved with STEM? Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast is creating an underwater robot (remotely operated vehicle or ROV) team. Designing and building an ROV for a specific mission will take you through the design process, encourage you to think creatively, research ideas and test and evaluate solutions. It will also challenge you to organize your time and resources while working towards a deadline.

This team will be entered into the regional competition, held in April 2016 at Old Dominion University. You must be willing to commit to be involved from January 2016 through competition in April 2016. Meeting times and locations will be decided by the team with a need to hold bi-weekly meetings. You will be working with an adult team to help guide you from start to finish.  For more information contact Donna Farnham at donnaf@gsccc.org or 757-410-1406.
