Updated Gold Award News

GSUSA has made two changes to the Girl Scout Gold Award.

National has updated the Gold Award outreach to include that projects may benefit the Girl Scout Community. The standards of the Gold Award have not changed. To ensure that this does not dilute the prestige, leadership efforts, or impact of each girl’s project, the Gold Award must still complete the seven requirements that are key to making it a sustainable project. Every Gold Award project must contain two of the three components: build, advocacy, education and an active leadership component; as well as an organization who agrees in writing to sustain the project in the years to come.

January 2019 Cookie Classic Run

With timed 5k and 10k races, runners of all abilities can join us in supporting GSCCC while preparing for their 2019 race season. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

Gold Award News

Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has updated the Gold Award outreach to include that projects may benefit the Girl Scout Community. The standards of the Gold Award have not changed. Gold Award projects must contain two of the three components: build, advocacy, and education; and an active leadership component, as well as an organization who agrees in writing to sustain the project in the years to come.

For example, Girl Scouts can benefit from the advocacy and education component of the project by being part of the audience. Build projects must have a community partner outside of the benefiting organization who will agree in writing to sustain what the girl has created in the years to come. This means that neither GSCCC nor a Girl Scout troop can be the sustaining partner.

As a reminder, collection projects and canned projects are not Gold Award Take Action projects, they are community service.

A girl must seek approval from the GSCCC philanthropy director prior to setting up money-earning activity or asking for any in-kind donation. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the Colonial Coast Gold Award Committee directly at gsgoldaward.gsccc@gmail.com.

Wisconsin Tragedy

As many have read, a terrible tragedy occurred Saturday, November 3 in Lake Hallie, Wisconsin, involving a hit-and-run crash that killed three girls and one adult volunteer from Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes’ Troop 3055, leaving at least one other girl who was listed in critical condition and has since been reported as stabilized and improving. The girls and volunteers were all living our mission, making their community a better place while following proper safety protocols, including being dressed in bright vests and, in the case of the girls, properly supervised by adults, as they cleaned up a stretch of highway they had adopted. The driver, who was reported to be driving while intoxicated, turned himself in and is in police custody.

GSUSA and GSCCC posted Facebook messages on Sunday to alert our members:
At this difficult time, we turn our thoughts to our sister Girl Scouts in Wisconsin, who are mourning the tragic news. Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes is holding a candlelight vigil at 6:00 p.m. CT – 7 p.m. ET today; we invite Girl Scouts everywhere to join the council in honoring the lives of the deceased by lighting a candle, observing a moment of silence, or engaging in other meaningful rituals. Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes is inviting anyone who would like to send a card to send it to their Eau Claire Service Center: 4222 Oakwood Hills Pkwy, Eau Claire, WI 54701.

We are aware this accident impacted Girl Scouts everywhere and that some GSCCC troops would like to dedicate meetings to creating cards and sending them to Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes Council. We understand that activities of this type may result in discussions of a sensitive nature. Therefore, we ask that troop leaders use the sensitive issues program permission slip for this purpose.  We also suggest that they refer to a GSUSA resource - leading difficult conversations with confidence. Cards may continue to be mailed to the address we posted earlier - Eau Claire Service Center: 4222 Oakwood Hills Pkwy, Eau Claire, WI 54701.

Catch the King!

It's the season of King Tides, the year's highest astronomical tides. The highest tides of everything other than the positions of the earth, sun and moon - and their gravitational effects - were taken out of the equation. Yet, impressive as they sound, this year's king tides will be more like commoners just decades from now. With sea levels rising, scientists say our high tides today will be more like low tides in 50 years.

We're building an army of data-gathering volunteers to catch one of this year's kings, plotting its rise as it crests across the region. The information will help scientists, planners and elected leaders get a better handle on our risks from coastal flooding.
