2016 Cookie Program News
Great news, GSCCC is adding an additional reward to the 2016 Cookie Program! Our girls always show tremendous support for the Gift of Caring program, so we’re going to challenge them to see if they can encourage their customers to give more. If a girl sells 25 Gift of Caring boxes, and their troop opted to receive incentives they will earn the “Girls Can Change the World” charm.

Generation Nano
The National Science Foundation and the National Nanotechnology Initiative have launched a competition called “Generation Nano: Small Science, Superheroes.” The contest asks high school students to design nanotechnology-enabled gear for an original superhero. Submissions are due by February 2, 2016 and will include a brief technical description of their gear and either a video or comic showing their superhero using that gear. Stan Lee, the co-creator of Marvel comic book characters including Spider-Man and the X-Men, recently championed Generation Nano on his blog.

Troop Project Opportunity - Centerpieces for Annual Award Luncheon
An Award Luncheon is held annually to recognize outstanding members who
have a great impact on girls, our Council and the Girl Scout Movement.
To add a special touch to the celebration, we are requesting donations
of centerpieces created by girls to decorate each of the tables. In
2016, we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scout Gold
Award, the highest award for girls, so the centerpieces should reflect
that theme. This is a great chance for girls to show their creativity
and share their artwork with all of GSCCC!

Out and About Online Learning Module is Now Available!
The online training, Out and About, is now available on the Adult Learning page of the gsccc.org website. This class replaces the former Troop Paperwork and Trip Planning and is required for all volunteers who will be planning activities with girls outside of their regular meeting time and place. The module reviews the GSUSA and GSCCC guidelines for planning age-appropriate day or overnight trips. It covers the paperwork necessary for trip permission and approval. This class is to be completed before a volunteer plans any activities away from a scheduled meeting place, including meeting time activities, day trips and overnight trips within the Council region.

2016 Cookie Classic 5K and 1 Mile
Join the Girl Scouts of the 7 Sisters, 7 Cities community for the 2nd Annual Cookie Classic in in Chesapeake, VA. The Trefoil Trek is a 5K starting at 9 a.m., followed by the Samoa Stroll Kid's 1-Miler at 10 a.m. This event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and Girl Scouts can meet badge requirements! We listened to our participants, and are returning to Bells Mill Park with course enhancements for a more accessible and family-friendly start/finish line. The volunteer race committee is working hard to improve the event, and this year we are offering free race photo downloads. We are also rerouting the course so you won’t end the race on a hill (we think the latter is probably much appreciated!). Another change is our brand new logo. To celebrate our new logo, we are offering discount codes for our events from now through December 31, 2015.
Use the discount code TREFOIL to receive $5 off the Trefoil Trek 5K. And use discount code SAMOA to receive $2 off the Samoa Stroll Kid's 1-Miler.
To learn more and to register visit the Cookie Classic event site here.
Global Action Award
Did you know the Girl Scout sisterhood not only stretches across the United States but spans the entire world, too?Girl Scouts of the USA is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS, for short), which includes 10 million girls in 146 countries. And all of those girls in all of those countries are working to make the world a better place—just like Girl Scouts!
Each year, Girl Scouts of all levels can earn their Global Action Award. This award connects the WAGGGS sisterhood by helping girls work together to make a difference on a topic that affects girls and women all over the world. It’s an official national award, so girls can wear it just like a badge on the front of their vest or sash!
The theme for this year’s Global Action Award is “Increasing Girls’ Access to Education.” In many parts of the world, it is hard for girls to go to school and finish their education, whether due to poverty, lack of schools, or cultural factors. We believe every girl deserves the chance to get an education. Let’s make it happen!
To learn more about activities girls can engage in to raise awareness, help solve this worldwide problem, and earn their Global Action Award, check out these Global Action Award guidelines:
